Mental Maps in Community Medicine: 3. History and Evolution of Medicine, Public Health

This post includes several maps pertaining to the history and evolution of Medicine and Public Health. Starting from ancient times, the maps progress to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

For the sake of brevity, I have only presented the most essential information. In the case of SDGs, I have provided the expanded description of each Goal, as well as the abbreviated forms. However, I have deliberately avoided critiquing the SDGs, since that would increase the size of the already large map.

I have taken the liberty of discussing Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and SDGs as part of the evolution of public health since I feel they are more appropriate here than elsewhere. Nevertheless, feel free to comment and suggest changes for improvement.

Map5. History and evolution of medicine, public health

The above is the topic overview, and lists the headings that will be covered. Map numbers have been mentioned here for ease of reference.

Map6. 1. Ancient times - 1500 AD

Map7. 2. 1500 - 1900 AD

Map8. 3. 1900 - 2000 AD

The above map relates to the 20th century, and includes a basic description of key developments during that time period.

Map9. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

The above map pertains to MDGs. Since they are of historical importance, I have provided a brief critique as well.

Map10. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The above map focuses on SDG Goal 3 (left hand side), as it directly relates to health. The full description of each SDG has been provided for completion’s sake. Students will probably prefer the abbreviated descriptors instead.

I have previously discussed SDGs on this blog, and encourage you to go through the relevant posts for further information.
